以高能物理研究所牵头，联合中国科学院大学、中国科学技术大学、清华大学、北京大学、山东大学、南京大学、上海交通大学、中科院理论所、南开大学、北京航空航天大学、中山大学、湘潭大学、复旦大学等其他研究所和高校组建的“粒子物理前沿”卓越创新中心，将以研究物质深层次结构及其相互作用为根本目标，通过二十到三十年的努力，取得一批重大成果，成为国际领先的粒子物理研究中心。

核探测技术与核电子学是粒子物理、核物理、粒子天体物理等学科的基础，在国民经济、国家安全与国防建设及核医学、核能源等方面起着重要的作用。过去二十多年来，由于市场经济的冲击，这个重要的基础学科在国内的发展受到影响，在许多研究单位已萎缩或消失，许多原有的工业基础也逐渐消亡。但随着近年来国民经济的飞速发展，相关应用领域对技术和人才的大量需求，国外商业产品的大量涌入，使核探测技术与核电子学学科发展倍受关注。
理论物理是华中师范大学的传统优势学科，2007年获“理论物理”国家重点学科。理论物理专业包含粒子物理、夸克物质物理、高能碰撞唯象学、统计物理与生物物理等研究方向，是华中师范大学粒子物理研究所和生物物理研究所的主要研究方向。
