星际复杂有机分子，尤其是生命相关分子（如糖和氨基酸），可能最终被运送到早期地球，从而逐渐演化为生命（图1）。因此，对星际复杂有机分子形成机理的研究，是解开宇宙生命起源之谜的核心课题。近年来，随着国内外射电天文望远镜灵敏度的大幅提高，星际空间中越来越多的复杂有机分子被探测到，包括多环芳香烃（PAHs）。然而，观测到的PAHs在星际空间中如何起源，长久以来都没有定论。
