太阳风携带质量、能量和动量进入地球空间时,需要先后经过磁层顶和等离子层顶两个边界,关于磁层顶的研究已经十分详细,对于等离子层顶,由于卫星高度的限制,研究相对较少。等离子体层顶是冷热等离子体的交界面,其外部被动态的环电流所包裹,存在一系列不稳定的特征。根据磁场模型,环电流会沿磁力线映射到电离层,形成特殊的弥散极光,通过探究这类特殊形态的极光,就可以间接研究等离子层顶。
