侗族有自己的语言，属汉藏语系壮侗语族侗水语支，分南、北两个方言。南、北两个方言又各分三个土语区。侗语以侗文的标准音贵州榕江话为代表，声母有32个，韵母有56个，声调舒声9个，促声6个。由于声调多，词汇丰富，所以侗语是一种“富于音乐性的语言”。
